Giving Through Your Will - Bequests

Leaving a gift in your Will to Catholic Community Services NSW/ACT  will help us to serve the community into the future through quality aged care, homelessness, mental health and disability services.

Catholic Community Services faces a future of ever increasing need for our specialised services to a wide community across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. We depend on the ongoing support of the community to achieve our goals.

Your Bequest is an enduring investment that we can apply to a range of vital programs and initiatives that will make a real difference to the lives and futures of people who have special needs.

How to Arrange a Bequest

The best way to arrange your gift is to speak with a solicitor. They can ensure your estate is distributed in a way that meets your wishes. Your solicitor can also create a Will for you or update your existing Will to include a gift to Catholic Community Services NSW/ACT.

Should you wish to choose an alternative method, please discuss this with your solicitor.

If you don’t already have a solicitor, the Law Council of Australia website will be able to help you.

How Important is My Will?

Your Will is a legal document which allows you to choose who will receive your assets and belongings when you die. If you don’t have a Will your estate will be distributed according to legislation. This can be costly and can also cause unnecessary problems and anxiety for your loved ones. For your own peace of mind, and for the sake of those close to you, we recommend that you have an up-to-date Will which reflects your current financial situation.

What is a Bequest?

A bequest is a specific gift of assets or belongings to a particular person or organisation through your Will.

There are three major types of bequests:

  • A Specific Bequest is a gift of a particular piece of property such as a house, furniture or jewellery
  • A General Bequest is usually a sum of money or a percentage of the value of your estate
  • A Residual Bequest includes anything remaining in your estate after the specific and general bequests have been paid

Some people like to donate a combination of two or more of the above types of gifts.

How Should I Word a Bequest to Catholic Community Services NSW/ACT?

We suggest that you use the following wording:

"I give ..... to Catholic Community Services NSW/ACT  for the general purposes thereof."

Should you wish to direct the gift to a special area of Catholic Community Services, we recommend:
I give …..(amount)  to Catholic Community Services NSW/ACT  for the specific purpose of ….."

(for example, " Older Women Vulnerable to Homelessness Service” or "its caring services for the aged").

Do I Need to Inform Catholic Community Services NSW/ACT of My Bequest?

You don’t have to tell us of your plans but if you do it gives Catholic Community Services the opportunity to offer our thanks and invite you to visit our services.
